Loop Cut splits the faces of a brush along a line that runs all the way round it. Nothing is removed: you get new edges to move with Edit Edge, or new faces to paint differently.
Using it
- Pick Loop Cut.
- Hover a face of any brush. The preview shows the cut: a plane standing on the face, through the cursor (snapped to the grid; hold Shift while moving for no snap). It runs round the whole ring of faces the plane crosses.
- The cut starts straight across the face edge nearest the cursor. Shift+Scroll wheel turns it 15 degrees about the face, Ctrl+Shift+Scroll wheel 1 degree. The angle is also in the settings.
- Click to split every face the cut crosses, as one undo step.
The faces beside the cut take the new vertices so nothing cracks. Materials, UVs and vertex paint are kept, and the new edges come out selected for the Edit Edge tool. Where the plane only touches a face at a corner or along an edge, that face is left whole. Esc hides the preview and squares the angle again.
To cut only some faces, select them with Edit Face and use its Cut button.
Note: A cut that runs into a displacement face shows red and cannot be made: This cut runs into a displacement face, which cannot be split. Remove the displacement first, or cut elsewhere.
Settings
