Move, Rotate and Scale are the selection tools. With any of them you click to select (see Selecting and hiding), then drag to change what you selected. They work on everything you can place: brushes, props, groups, lights, points and volumes.
Move
- Select something.
- Drag it: it slides across the horizontal (XZ) plane. Hold Alt to drag it up and down along Y instead.
- Or drag one of the colored gizmo arrows to move along that axis only.
- Esc or Right mouse cancels a move in progress.
While dragging, press X, Y or Z to lock the move to that axis. Moves snap to the grid and to smart guides; hold Shift to move freely and Ctrl to snap flush against a face.
Drag on empty space to draw a selection rectangle.
Terrain and water edges: select one terrain or water surface and the Move tool shows flat arrows on its edges. Drag an arrow to extend or trim that side without scaling it. A terrain adds or removes whole tiles.
Rotate
- Select something.
- Drag one of the circles of the gizmo to turn the selection about the axis that circle goes round.
Rotation snaps in 15 degree steps; hold Shift to turn freely.
Scale
- Select something.
- Drag an axis handle to scale along that axis only, or the center cube to scale evenly in every direction.
- Hold Shift (Uniform Scale) to keep the proportions while you drag an axis handle.
Some entities (water volumes, decals) turn a scale into a new size rather than a stretch, so their settings stay meaningful. With Lock UVs off, a scaled brush's textures stay their normal size.
In the 2D views
In the Top, Front and Side views the three tools show eight resize handles round the selection, and click again for rotate handles. See Editing in a 2D view.
Settings
The same settings are shared by all three tools: change them in one and the others follow.
| Setting | Type | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transform space | List | GLOBAL | Which way the gizmo's axes point. GLOBAL: the world's axes. LOCAL: the object's own. NORMAL: along the selected face's normal. VIEW: the camera's. PARENT: the axes of the group the object is in. |
| Lock UVs | Check box | Off | On, textures stay glued to the brush and move, turn and scale with it. Off, textures stay fixed in the world and the brush slides under them. |
| Origin only (groups) | Check box | Off | Move and Rotate only. On, they move or turn only the origin (the pivot) of the selected groups: the gizmo goes where you drag it and everything in the group stays where it is. Nothing that is not a group moves. It is turned off every time the editor starts. |
Tips
- G picks the selection up as a ghost that sits on whatever is under the mouse; often quicker than dragging. See Repositioning.
- Tools > Transform... (Ctrl+M) moves, turns and scales by typed amounts.
- Tools > Align and Distribute Evenly line things up.
